What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is another type of weight-loss surgery that involves removing a large portion of the stomach to create a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold and helps patients feel full sooner, leading to weight loss.
During the procedure, a surgeon removes about 75-80% of the stomach, leaving a narrow “sleeve” or tube-shaped stomach. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the intestines are not rerouted, so nutrient absorption remains largely intact.
Gastric sleeve surgery is typically recommended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 35 or higher who have obesity-related health problems like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
